I - DEPOSITORY LIBRARY REPORT

Background Information:
You are the Head of a documents collection at a type of library of your choice and creation.
Describe your library, (size of user population, size of collection, size of documents
collection, number of employees, etc), be sure to give all important information.
The Problem:
Each year documents and depository librarians are faced with the prospect of cuts to
the depository library program or the government printing office. You have
just received your annual urgent message from the American Library Association Washington
Office requesting that you contact your legislators to increase the funding for the
depository library program. But, the library and information world is faced
with the transition to an Electronic Federal Depository Library Program. Why do
we need to continue to fund a paper Depository Program, won't the Electronic Depository
Program be better?

Your Assignment:
- Select four articles on depository libraries and GPO Access from the
course bibliography and two articles that you find), Write a summary of the articles,
discussing the topic and issues addressed.
- All librarians or information professionals are going to be faced with
how to provide access to government information and what role their institution will play
in providing that access. Using the information that you have learned
from the class lectures and have gathered from your assigned readings and from the
Listserve or on the Internet, write a five page paper discussing how your depository
institution will be affected and stating your position on the role of depository libraries
responsibility to provide print, electronic access to government information or both
information formats as a depository library. Integrate what you have learned about
depository libraries and their role from the summarized articles and class lecture.
Provide complete citations for any resources that you use to support your arguments.
Be sure and discuss the implications of the Transition plan, electronic
specifications, and other materials cited above. Discuss how budget cuts will affect
your documents collections. How will these policy documents affect your documents
collection?
