The organization was founded in 1948 by a group of leading librarians and library educators to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students. The motto, Aliis inserviendo consumor, meaning "Consumed in the service of others," was selected by the founders based on the concept of dedication of librarians and other information professionals to the service of others. Selection for membership in Beta Phi Mu is by invitation of the faculty from an American Library Association accredited professional degree program.
Regular membership, including the privileges of voting, holding office, and chapter affiliation, shall be granted to candidates at any college or university where the American Library Association has accredited a professional degree program, all other programs offered under the direction of the same faculty, and who fulfill the following requirements:
Either...
Completion of ALL requirements leading to a master's degree
with a scholastic average of no lower than 3.75 where A equals 4.0, or
Completion of planned programs of advanced study beyond the
master's degree which require full time study for one or more academic years
with a scholastic average of 3.75 where A equals 4.0.
Total eligible candidates shall comprise no more than
twenty-five percent of the annual graduating class.
Recommendation for membership by the faculty of the school
attesting to their professional promise.
There is no time limit for acceptance of invitation.
Candidates of schools outside the United States and Canada who fulfill the same requirements as above subject to approval of the Executive Board based upon defined acceptable standards of equivalency.
Selection for membership in the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences Beta Lambda Chapter of Beta Phi Mu is by invitation of the School of Library and Information Sciences faculty and is based on academic performance and professional promise. Selection for membership takes place near the end of each semester (Fall, Spring and Summer) and pending graduates (those participating in the SLIS Capstone Experience) are eligible for consideration.
Beta Phi Mu, the library and information studies international
honor society, was founded at the University of Illinois in August, 1948, by a
group of leading librarians and library educators. Aware of the notable
achievements of honor societies in other professions, they believed that such a
society would have much to offer librarianship and library education. The first
initiation was held in the spring of 1949 at the University of Illinois. The
society was ably served by Rolland Stevens as first President and Harold Lancour
as first Executive Secretary.
Its significance was recognized in 1969 when Beta Phi Mu was formally admitted
to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies. In 1997, the
society became an affiliate of the American Library Association.
The insignia of Beta Phi Mu is the dolphin and anchor, mark of the Venetian printer, Aldus Manutius; he strove to create beautiful editions of the Greek and Latin Classics and dedicated his life to making his works accessible. Gold and black keys and pins bearing the Beta Phi Mu insignia are available to members. Inquire from Beta Phi Mu, the national office.
Over 26,000 graduates of accredited library and information studies programs in the United States and Canada have been initiated. There are 43 active chapters based in professional library and information studies schools.
