Youth Librarianship and Services:
An Overview of Educational
Opportunities at SLIS

If you are a new student, welcome to the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences!

If you are a prospective student interested in Youth Librarianship and Services opportunities,  please read this information and contact me with questions!

Youth librarianship and information services for youth are an exciting form of work!  There are many openings across Texas and throughout the United States for master's prepared youth specialists in public libraries and other settings such as community colleges and academic libraries particularly those with schools of education where they can work with youth-related materials in that setting.  Please read below about the Master's Degree with an emphasis in Youth Librarianship and/or the section about the Graduate Academic Certificate in Youth Services in Libraries and the Graduate Academic Certificate in Storytelling..

MASTER'S DEGREE WITH A PROGRAM OF STUDY EMPHASIS IN YOUTH LIBRARIANSHIP
If you are seeking your Master's degree in SLIS, please keep in mind that you will receive a Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences which will qualify you for positions not limited to youth librarianship. If you know you want a specialization in this area, you will have the opportunity to work with three full-time members of the graduate faculty  who teach a wide variety of courses targeted to the youth services population. See details below for options.

  • Youth Librarianship (YL) Program of Study (POS) - If you haven't looked at the Youth Librarianship POS information, this is a good starting place to learn more about the courses and requirements. SLIS awards Program of Study Documents suitable for framing along with your UNT Graduate School diploma. These documents are very nice because they reflect your area of specialization. Students may receive more than one program of study document if they have complete all the requirements for both. The SLIS Program of Study page lists the requirements for the various programs and the Admissions Checklist page for application instructions..

GRADUATE ACADEMIC CERTIFICATE IN YOUTH SERVICES IN LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION SETTINGS
The Graduate Academic Certificate is endorsed by the University of North Texas Toulouse Graduate School and aligned with guidelines set forth by the national Council of Graduate Schools. If you are seeking a Graduate Academic Certificate at UNT SLIS, you will take credit-granting courses with three full-time members of the graduate faculty who teach a wide variety of courses targeted to the youth services population. Visit the Graduate Academic Certificate page for more detailed information about the application process and requirements.
