Joseph Campbell Foundation Website
http://www.jcf.org
This foundation is dedicated to the promotion and continuation of the work of the writer Joseph Campbell. His mythological writings and studies promoted the importance and influence of mythology in human lives. A statement of the foundation’s purpose and goals is clearly stated in the opening page. The foundation’s directors and principal contributors are listed in an opening page. Tabs provide easy access to areas that describe the foundation, the works of Campbell, other projects and discussion groups. Campbell was a recognized authority in mythology and published many books about mythology. These books have influenced and encouraged the study of mythology. For teachers using mythology, Campbell is an important source. Storytellers can use his work to trace the development of myths in various cultures. His interviews with Bill Moyers on PBS were memorable for the insights he shared. This page is authoritative because it is published by his heirs and co-workers. Bias exists only in the positive attitude toward mythology’s influence and importance in human lives and in the support for Campbell’s ideas. One drawback is the site’s requirement that you register and log in each time you access the site. Access to the main areas of the site is blocked unless you log in. It is updated frequently according to the dates posted at the bottom of the pages. Accuracy and currency are high in a site such as this one where an individual’s name and reputation are attached. The material in this site is more theoretical and broad compared to sites that have specific stories. However, the site is important because it offers in-depth discussion of the intrinsic value of mythology. This kind of discussion is not often found elsewhere. The layout of the web site is easy to access, understand, and maneuver through. Navigation tools are clearly marked. The tabs at the top of the home page give easy navigation to the pages you want to access. Finding Campbell’s work is easier on this web site than it is in a book store. Promoting discussion groups means that Campbell’s ideas will always be thoroughly challenged and updated as new theories arise.
