19th Century German Stories
http://www.fln.vcu.edu/menu.html
This is a dual language site. It offers German stories from the 19th and late 18th centuries. The site is organized for German language classes. It is part of a larger initiative by Professor Godwin-Jones to empower language teachers to use the Web to help students learn. For example, there are self-correcting quizzes available for the stories, but they are in German. The narratives are verified from documented editions. There was no detail available as to the verification process. The English translations have been added to the site and are available for the majority of the stories. The stories are organized by author. This site offers stories, fairy tales, ballads and narrative poems, and novellas. This site is the product of Robert Godwin-Jones, Professor of Foreign Languages at Virginia Commonwealth University. The copyright date is 1994-1999. It was last updated in November 1999. All of the links go to stories on the database or sites within Virginia Commonwealth University. Because the links do not change and the stories are from nineteenth century literature, the site remains current despite having been established three years ago. There are links for information about Professor Godwin-Jones and to submit comments. Although this site was designed with language teachers in mind, it is an excellent source of German stories for teachers, librarians, and storytellers.
