Writing-World.com (listed as "Tips for Writers" in course webpage listings)
http://www.writing-world.com/index.html
Writing-World.Com is not technically a site for performance storytellers. It focuses much more on publishing, including information on writing classes, contests, events, and author services, as well as articles about e-publishing, finances, freelance writing, copyright issues, and other topics for writers. However, it also contains articles on the techniques of writing, many of which can be used by storytellers seeking to hone their craft. One section deals with general fiction issues and provides information relating to characterization, developing setting, etc. Other sections of the site deal with genre-specific storytelling (science fiction and fantasy, romance, etc.) and one section is devoted entirely to writing for children. These sections often feature author interviews, which are insightful and interesting. Perhaps the most favorable feature of the site is its level of professionalism. Articles must be submitted to the webmistress (Moira Allen; it is unclear whether she is associated with a sponsoring institution or not)for review before they are posted, and writers must include a list of credentials; according to the submission guidelines, "we want to know that the tips you're recommending have actually worked for you, or for SOMEONE (e.g., someone you've interviewed)". Writers are paid 5 cents per word for original articles and a $20 flat rate for reprints selected to appear on the website. While such strict guidelines may hamper the sense of community provided by many other more relaxed sites, there is something reassuring about knowing that the advice provided comes from knowledgeable people; each article contains a by-line, short author bio and photo, providing a true sense of reliability. The site could be better organized to aid navigation, but for the most part it is easy enough to use. Overall, this is a valuable resource for those patient enough to seek out the useful information.
